Portland ranks first of 50 Greenest Cities

Recently, Popsci.com published an article about “America’s 50 Greenest Cities” (by America of course they mean the United States — I won’t get into that debate here).Using data gathered from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society’s Green Guide, which collected data only on cities with a 100,000+ population, they compiled a variety of statistics into rankings in four broad categories: electricity, transportation, green living, and recycling/green perspective (you can get the details of the rankings at the full article).

So, why is this important? Because my beloved Stumptown took first! Even though the max ranking was 30 and PDX received a meager 23.1, it was still the highest ranking of the 50 cities in the study. Here’s what the article had to say about Portland, OR:

America’s top green city has it all: Half its power comes from renewable sources, a quarter of the workforce commutes by bike, carpool or public transportation, and it has 35 buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

San Francisco, Calif., came in a very close second, followed by 3) Boston, Mass., 4) Oakland, Calif., 5) Eugene, Ore., 6) Cambridge, Mass., 7) Berkeley, Calif., 8 ) Seattle, Wash., 9) Chicago, Ill., and 10) Austin, Tex. Yeah, that’s right, another Oregon city took fifth. I love my state.

Plus, Californians have second, fourth and seventh, while Washington came in eighth. That means the West Coast took more than half of the top 10 spots on this list. Are we good or what? ;)

Okay, I’m done bragging now.
