Chocolate Skittles join the rainbow

Have you heard? Skittles has a new addition to their rainbow … brown. That is, they’ve introduced a flavor group, Chocolate Mix, that includes five shades of this not-so-fruity color: Vanilla, S’mores, Chocolate Carmel, Chocolate Pudding and Brownie Batter.

Chocolate Skittles

I spotted them at the Dollar Store and couldn’t resist picking up a bag to try. After all, it says chocolate, so it couldn’t be all bad, right? My mom wasn’t too sure. Her first words when I arrived home were something along the lines of, “Are they like M&M’s?” Then later during the taste test, she and Fidhlear agreed that, “Chocolate isn’t supposed to be chewy.” I wasn’t quite as skeptical, but I wasn’t too thrilled, either. Here’s my results on the Chocolate Skittles:

  • Vanilla – First of all, aren’t vanilla and chocolate sort of opposites? So then what is a vanilla-flavored Skittle doing in a Chocolate Skittle mix? Anyway, I usually love vanilla but this was just a little too sweet. Tastes a lot like vanilla cake frosting.
  • S’mores – Definitely my favorite of the bunch, but that’s honestly not saying much. Initially it’s very sweet like the rest, with a yummy “toastiness”, and it leaves a sort of graham-cracker aftertaste. Very fitting of a s’more, but again, not much in the way of chocolate. Of course, if you think about, a s’more is only 1/3 chocolate anyway.
  • Chocolate Carmel – Yup, this has a hint of carmel … but not much. Definitely sweet, perhaps the sweetest of the bunch. But chocolate? Not even a whiff. Overall, there’s not much taste other than a general sweetness to this “chocolate skittle”.
  • Chocolate Pudding and Brownie Batter – I’m grouping these two because with such similar colors, it was nearly impossible to tell them apart! They’re both a deep, dark shade, and the pudding seemed to have a slight reddish or purple tint, but unless you had one of each you wouldn’t know which was which. The flavors are similarly indistinct. They each have a rich, fudgy (and of course sweet) flavor. If you chew one right after the other, you experience a slight difference in flavor … the pudding is lighter and the brownie is more dense … but not enough to garner separate descriptions. At least these two were obviously chocolate though!

In the end, if you’re curious … give them a try. I wouldn’t say that Chocolate Skittles are a cure for chocoholics seeing that only 2/5 of the bag truly taste chocolately, but anyone with a sweet tooth will appreciate them at least once. I probably won’t buy them again, but I did finish off this bag ;)
