After already spotting and blogging about one bizarre story on Telegraph.co.uk (see Thursday’s post), I couldn’t help myself from wandering the site a bit more. Now I know why they say curiosity killed the cat. This concept honestly just weirded me out.
They call it “perle de lait” (milk pearl), and it’s created by boiling a human mother’s milk mixed with vinegar, causing the protein in the milk to harden into a plastic which can then be painted and molded into any shape. Accordingly, a milk model of a baby’s head which can be used as a pendant for a necklace (left) is one of the objects already created by the French design team who’s behind this unusual invention, Duende. This item and more will be on display during an exhibition at La Cuisine gallery in Nègrepelisse, France starting September 13. The designers say they foresee a day when any mother could send a bottle of breast milk to a laboratory and obtain a permanent memento of her pregnancy.
Call me crazy, but I would think photographs and the baby would be all the mementos a woman needs!
