New drink debut at Starbucks

Although Starbucks baristas defiantly claim “We aren’t Jamba Juice” … the coffee giant’s newest concoction, protein-packed Vivanno fruit smoothies, certainly seem an unusual addition to the menu.

Let me share a few important facts about the new lineup at SBUX:

  • Both “nourishing blends” roll in under 270 calories.
  • Both offer under 5 grams of fat … even less if you opt for nonfat milk over the standard 2%.
  • The only available size is Grande.
  • No artificial colors, sweetners or high fructose corn syrup are used.
  • Both include a whole banana (an insider told me baristas endured special training on banana peeling to avoid those stringy bits!)
  • Both feature Starbucks’ proprietary whey protein & fiber powder (16g protein, 5g fiber)
  • The caffeine-addicted can add a shot of espresso to the Banana Chocolate Blend for a deeper flavour.
  • The Orange Mango Banana can be customized with Matcha Green Tea Powder, adding just 40 calories, antioxidants, and a lovely green tint.

Alright … on to the review.   I’ve tried both flavors, as well as the OMB with matcha, and my verdict on all is that although I applaud Starbucks for the effort, there’s just nothing special about the Vivannos.  The drinks are smooth but a bit on the bland side, tasty enough for a protein-infused beverage and a refreshing alternative to sugary options elsewhere, but why banana?  I’m just not a big banana fan, especially not blended with chocolate, and I know I’m not the only one in the world.  Guess I’ll be sticking to my light frappuccinos for now.
