Creating a blogroll on WP

My Plurk buddy Glyphrunner just asked me a very good question, and rather than keeping it between the two of us, I thought I’d share the wealth of knowledge by writing my answer in a post.  The inquiry: “Uh, how do you add people to the Blog Roll in WordPress? Blogger is really easy, but I can’t seem to find a “Add to Blog Roll” in WP.”

Blogroll on Sidebar

Option 1: Blogroll on Sidebar

Well, Glyph, that’s because there isn’t a nice, simple, “Add to Blog Roll” link or button in WordPress.  For some reason the creators kind of hide it another another name.   From your dashboard, you’ll need to select the “Manage” option, then “Links”, and that’s where you can add to, edit, or delete from the blogroll that appears on your sidebar (right).

Blogroll on its own page

Option 2: Blogroll on its own page

There’s also another option, and this is what I prefer.  Instead of using your sidebar (which can get unwieldy if you have a lot of friends!), you can create a separate page for your blogroll.

The process is similar.  From your dashboard, you’ll need to select the “Manage” option again, then “Pages” this time (left).  Again, you have the option to add, edit and delete extra pages.  This option takes a bit more formatting than a blogroll in the sidebar, but it can also be much easier on the eyes for us popular people ;)

Glyphrunner, I hope this helps.  You can add me to your blogroll now, and I’m adding you to mine, too!
